Adventuresome Me

My photo
Who I started out as is not who I have become! I grew up in a small town, very small...and all I wanted to do was move to the city. Now as an adult that small town has grown and is overcrowded. I want what I had as a kid...small town living. We don't appreciate what we have until it is gone. I water my plants with my rain barrel water, grow veggies in the front yard and want chickens and goats in the worst way. I married my high school sweetheart and after 18 years of marriage converted to Judaism. Did I mention I have 4 kids and I homeschool? My oldest son just graduated! The purpose of this blog is to share my experiences--homeschooling, being Jewish and loving it in a not so Jewish town, gardening, animals, and alternative medicines. So, if any of these things interest you---come along for the ride!

Mini Homestead

There is a movement of sorts where people are taking more control of their food by growing in containers, front yard as well as back yard, on balconies of apartments and even indoors.  We live on about half and acre with neighbors all around and are trying to use our resources the best we can.

This is our beginning.....you have to start somewhere

This is our backyard (the left side of the picture-you can see the back of our house), lots of shade.  Our dog Shelby actually found a nest of wild baby bunnies back here, only a few weeks after our baby bunnies were born.  I wonder what else is back here that she didn't find?  We will be putting up a shed or 2 (the white one is not ours) and also a chicken coop and then an area for goats.  After years of thinking and contemplating, we are getting closer.

This mower belonged to my parents, we have a gas mower too but I just love this one!

Here is Honey, before she was a mom.

Outdoor bunny hutch, we got it free with the bunny as well as an indoor hutch.  Bunny droppings make great fertilizer!

I sold some things on ebay and bought this rain barrel at Home Depot.  Love it!  Fills up very fast.

This shelving unit was in a neighbors garbage.  Now it is used for starting seeds.

The beginning of our container garden.  We will also be putting up raised beds and using the square foot gardening method.  Have done it before and it works well.

Hubby built this fence and fenced in the front yard, the kids and I stained it

Trash find!  Using it near the garden for clippers, gloves, etc...

An old picture of our 2 youngest in front of the garden we used to have-they were so cute!
